About Pathology
Pathology is one of the fundamental yet largely behind-the-scenes medical disciplines, playing an essential role in accurate diagnosis and therapeutic decision-making. Pathologists examine, interpret, teach, and research diseases at the tissue, cellular, and molecular levels.
In oncology, pathological diagnosis forms the basis of treatment planning. The pathologist determines the type, stage, extent, and biological characteristics of a tumor, all of which are essential for selecting the most appropriate personalized therapy.
Our institute also performs intraoperative (frozen section) diagnostics. During surgery, tissue samples removed from the patient can be examined within a short period of time to provide the operating surgeon with immediate diagnostic information. These examinations require extensive professional expertise and rapid decision-making.
Pathological practice also includes autopsy examinations, which contribute to a better understanding of diseases, their progression, and the exact cause of death.
Diagnostic Activities
Every year, thousands of patients are treated at the University of Debrecen Clinical Center for the diagnosis and treatment of various medical conditions. Our institute supports patient care primarily through close collaboration with treating physicians.
Our main task is the comprehensive pathological examination of tissues and organs removed during outpatient and inpatient care. Diagnostic activities are carried out in several specialized laboratories equipped with modern technologies and operating under standardized workflows and strict quality assurance systems.
By processing more than 18,000 tissue samples annually and performing nearly 45,000 diagnostic procedures, we provide essential support for clinical therapeutic decision-making.
Professional Expertise and Collaboration
The institute’s staff includes highly experienced pathologists, molecular diagnostic specialists, residents, PhD students, medical laboratory analysts, histology and cytology technicians, and laboratory assistants.
Close professional collaboration with clinical departments and regional hospitals is a key element of our work. Clinical pathologists actively participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, particularly in oncological tumor boards responsible for treatment planning and therapeutic decisions.
The institute also fulfills important regional responsibilities in several specialized fields, including:
- histopathological diagnostics of kidney diseases,
- oncogenetic molecular diagnostics,
- consultation and second-opinion pathology services.
We accept histological samples for consultation and second-opinion evaluation from healthcare institutions throughout Hungary.
Education and Research
In addition to diagnostic services, our institute is actively involved in medical education and scientific research. We participate in the teaching of pathology within medical, dental, and other health sciences training programs.
Our research activities focus primarily on histopathology, cytology, and molecular tumor pathology, contributing to the development of modern diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.
