Pathology is a scientific field dealing with investigation, education and research of the diseases on histological, cellular and molecular level. Thousands of patients visit the Clinical Center of University of Debrecen every year to diagnose and treat various medical problems. The contact with patients at our Institute is mostly mediated by the attending physicians. Our basic task is to examine the tissues or organs removed during outpatient or inpatient care in several specialized laboratories, which is essential for diagnosis and often for the choice of treatment. All our laboratories carry out well-documented work processes and quality assurance, with national and international certifications.
With nearly 55,000 diagnostic interventions applied to the processing of more than 18,000 tissues each year, we support physicians in their therapeutic decision-making. The staff of our Institute consists of highly experienced pathologists, molecular diagnostic specialists, training residents, Ph.D. students, as well as medical laboratory analysts, histology and cytology technicians, and laboratory assistants. We have a significant consultation collaboration with other clinics and regional hospitals. Clinical pathologist play an important role in different team meetings organized by disease groups. Among them, the most outstanding are the oncology teams that make decisions in the treatment of cancer patients.
In addition to treating patients arriving at the Clinical Center, our Institute plays a regional role in a number of specific areas, for example histological diagnostics of renal diseases or oncogenetic molecular testing. We accept histological samples from any health care institution in the country for consultation (second opinion) examination.
We also participate in teaching pathology for general medicine, dental and other university health education, as well as special research assignments in the field of histology, cytology and molecular tumor pathology.
